Holy Family Community School from Rathcoole looked in determined mood as they began their efforts to defend their South Dublin Cup titles at the home of Guinness’ Iveagh Grounds recently…
Having won both the Junior and Senior titles last year (the juniors shared the Cup after a final draw) the school displayed they have no intentions of relinquishing their grip on what have become very competitive competitions. The finals are again at South Dublin County Council’s Tallaght Stadium this year.
Last week the Junior side defeated a very youthful Drimnagh Castle side 43-3. Stand out player Daragh Madden bagged a hat-trick of tries in a brilliant all-round display, matching his fantastic form for his club Clondalkin RFC this season.
In the senior section, Rathcoole got the better of St Pat’s Cathedral in a 34-7 scoreline. St Pat’s showed how far they have come, however, having been well beaten by the same opponents in the Development cup earlier this season. Their stand-out players were Jack Dolan-Grealy (captain) and Luka Mac Veigh-French who led their team to a spirited performance.
Teacher in charge Enda Brady was enthusiastic about the future as only four of his squad are playing club rugby which is a remarkable fact given the standard and fight in the schools performance. Rathcoole had solid performances from all over the park with Clondalkin first team player Mikey Russell pulling the strings as outhalf and John Trand making powerful bursts from number 8.
Teachers Charlie Hill and Des O’Connor of Holy Family Rathcoole must take credit for ensuring fixtures get played in what has been a busy period with mid-term and mocks hampering fixtures. Community Rugby Officer for South Dublin, Tom McKeown was hugely impressed with the riches of talent on display and it won’t be long before these players are filtering through to a higher level of rugby. A huge credit to all teachers and schools involved.
