Fingal County Council Rugby Development Officer, Gerry McCleery, was delighted to be asked to deliver a six week tag rugby programme at the Children Detention Schools, Oberstown, Lusk, Co. Dublin…
Gerry was assisted by two recent graduates of Carlow IT and he delivered a coaching presentation on the fundamentals of the game to a group of 15 boys and girls.
At their award ceremony when the participants were awarded with Certificates of Completion, McCleery was high in his praise, ‘The level of skill and commitment was higher than many peer groups I have been involved with and quite a number of them would be successful at the contact game ,especially given their fitness levels’.
The education was not all one way. ‘One of our groups had an amateur boxing background and he could teach many players much about “fast feet” and I am certainly going to look into the training regime of boxers’.
A return visit introducing contact rugby is on the agenda for the near future.
