The Leinster Schools, sponsored by Newstalk, completed their third straight win for three bonus-points against Connacht to retain the interprovincial Series with a 33-7 win at Corinthian Park on Saturday afternoon…

Centre Matthew Gilsenan shot Leinster to a third minute lead as before they were forced into the trenches by a dogged and determined Connacht collection.

There was stalemate for some time. Then, full-back Jack Power made the vital breakthrough on the half hour and right wing Con Callan followed suit two minutes later to forge a 13-0 advantage at the interval.

The problem for Leinster was that they had the backing of a strong wind in that time and Connacht wasted little time in constructing a converted try. It was game on at 13-7 in the 37th minute.

Gilsenan quickly settled Leinster with a penalty and Callan finished off his fifth try in three matches in the 44th minute. Gilsenan was on the end of Leinster’s fourth, bonus-point try, which he converted midway through the second period and Power snatched his second at the death.

“It is the only Leinster team to do a Grand Slam this year,” said Team Manager Gordon Smyth.

“This is a pleasing way to round off what has been a very good championship with a third bonus point win. It is just reward for all the tremendous effort the boys have put in since we started training back in July”.
