The British & Irish Lions, featuring Leinster trio Jamie Heaslip, Brian O’Driscoll and Jonathan Sexton, claimed a narrow 23-21 victory in the opening Test against the Wallabies in Brisbane on Saturday…
There were big performances from the Leinster men against a spirited Australian side.
Giant Welsh duo George North and Alex Cuthbert scored a brace of tries, with Cardiff Blues full-back Leigh Halfpenny chipping in with 13 points from the boot – to give the tourists a 1-0 lead in the series.
There was heartbreak for Australia who had penalty kicks late on from impressive sub Kurtley Beale which failed to hit the target, but the Lions held on and were good value for their victory in front of a vocal travelling contingent in the Suncorp Stadium.
Speaking after the game, Lions Coach Warren Gatland said: ‘(There were) great tries out there by both sides. It could have gone either way, but we’ll take it and we’re glad to win. Key moments? George North’s fantastic try.
‘Australia are a dangerous team and they keep on fighting to the end. We probably played too much rugby in our own half in the first half. But we’re really happy with the result.’
