What started many years ago as an end of term Primary school game between Rosslare NS and Kilmore NS, for a trophy sponsored by Billy Kelly of the above Hotel, has now become a County blitz tournament…

This came about at Wexford Wanderers R.F.C. grounds at Park Lane on Tuesday 22nd May 2013 when a section of primary schools from within County Wexford participated in the annual County NS Blitz. It was a great occasion for boys and girls to show off their talents and skills, they have been coached by the C.C.R.O’s from the four county rugby clubs Wexford, Enniscorthy, New Ross, and Gorey during the year.

Under the new Leinster Rugby / Wexford County Council Community Rugby Partnership over 5,000 boys and girls have experienced rugby coaching from respective C.C.R.O Noel Ferguson, Ross Barbour, Nick Murphy and Phil Horan / PJ Clench. A cross section of national schools namely Newbawn, Gorey Central, Ballymitty, Taghmon, Screen and St John of God Mercy School attended the event this year. A total of 16 teams competed in various competitions for various trophies in a fun loving enjoyable day’s tag rugby.

Working on 4 pitches with 4 teams per pitch meant all teams played 3 games each before Semi/finals and Final stages. Skills, behaviour, sportsmanship, dress were all taken into account to determine the outcome of the day.

R.D.O. Leinster Rugby Maurice Logue refereed and coached the girls section for the ECHO Newspaper Cup and all the C.C.R.O’s refereed and managed the successful day. Happy faces by all who participated were proof of this in itself.

The Mayor of Wexford Jim Allen, Sports Active Wexford Administrator Fran Ronan and Tracey Nolan, representing Billy Kelly of Kelly’s Resort Hotel Rosslare, were all there to present the relative trophies and certificates to each school and all schools were winners.

Mayor Allen spoke of the great work that is being done in Primary Schools and the County and the work Fran Ronan is doing in Sports Active, also the sponsors of each trophy Kelly’s Hotel, People Newspaper, Echo Newspaper, and all the certificates from Wexford County Council. He also welcomed the idea of girl’s mini rugby at Wexford Wanderers which is commencing on Sunday 26th May.
