As local Leinster Rugby rivalries go, they don’t get much bigger than Cill Dara versus Newbridge…

With both catchment areas bordering each other, many of the school classrooms in the local parishes have a mixture of young players from both clubs. Playground teams are already self-picked!

With both clubs due to clash this Saturday, November 9th at 2.30 p.m. in Cill Dara Rugby Club, anticipation among supporters of both clubs is building. After five rounds of the Leinster League Division 1A, the two Kildare teams have had a mixed bag of results. Cill Dara is holding their own at home with two wins from two but is struggling to replicate that form away from Beech Park. For a very young team, it’s hoped that the experience they gain each week will soon pay dividends.

Newbridge started the league slowly, not surprising given the rebuilding that the club had to do in the wake of so many player departures. However, they exploded into form with a trashing of the mighty Tullow and were unlucky to lose last Saturday with the last kick of the game to an in-form Coolmine.

The precarious nature of the mid-table positions of both Kildare clubs means that a loss in this derby fixture could change the focus of the season ahead from top four aspirations to fears of relegation. As if this fixture needed added spice…

A large and very vocal crowd is expected. The Ireland versus Samoa game will be shown live in the clubhouse after.
