Gerry McCleery, Fingal Community Rugby Officer, officiated at his first interpro, when teams of special needs players representing Leinster and Munster played a very competitive match at Westmanstown RFC…

Leinster were strongly represented by athletes from Westmanstown Taggers and Munster comprised of players from D.O.C. Limerick.

‘As with any Leinster/Munster clash the players displayed real passion for the jersey and the match was hotly contested,’ McCleery said after the result, a draw which showed how capable the players are at tag rugby.

‘It is our intention to expand the fixture to an annual event’, Senior Coach Jorge Zulkouski told the athletes following the match.

Special thanks go to Phillip Kelly,D.O.C. Dublin and John Callahan, D.O.C Limerick and also a large band of supporters who travelled from Limerick and who, together with the home supporters gave the match a great atmosphere.

The match was the culmination of an excellent first year during which the Taggers played matches at De La Salle Palmerstown and Terenure Under-13s European Competition.

Leinster Rugby hope to co-ordinate the various Special needs groups next year and are keen to collate contact details from active teams. They are also keen to set up a teaching skills workshop in August.

Please contact if you are heading up a Special needs tag team.
