The Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Junior Cup will start with the holders’ St Michael’s engaging Catholic University School on Tuesday.
Thereafter, there are two double-headers on Wednesday and Thursday followed by the last three first-round matches on Friday.
Tuesday, 7 February
St Michael’s College v CUS (Energia Park, KO 3pm).
Champions St Michael’s will be led by number eight Myles Berman, brother of last year’s SCT captain Sam.
He is joined by hooker Joe Kennedy, flanker Owen Twomey and outside back Andrew Norse from the match-day squad in last season’s final against Roscrea.
Front rowers Matthew Dredge and Conor Canniffe, lock Tom Reynolds and back row Setanta McLaughlin were in the extended squad in 2022.
Harrison McMahon directs the attack for centres Matthew Haugh and Scott Barron to show their value.
Wings Josh Divilly and Eoin Loo provide a scoring threat and control the team’s defence from the edges.
CUS will look to kick on from a league campaign that showed great potential and squad depth.
There is plenty of leadership and experience with out-half Alex Morley, number eight Matthew Flynn and wing Darragh Redmond all returning from last year.
CUS will look to their pack to bring physicality up front. Tight-head Zach Foley and Flynn have set the standard in this area.
Captain Morley will be instrumental in CUS implementing their game plan and bringing the talented backline into the game.
In particular, the centre pairing of David Li and Ethan Marshall is dangerous in attack, while back-three player Daniel Clarke poses a threat in the wide channels.
Wednesday, 8 February
Kilkenny College v Blackrock College (Energia Park, KO 1.30pm).
Founded in 1538, Kilkenny College is the largest boarding school in Ireland with 460 ‘overnighters’ and 455-day pupils.
The Marble city kids have enjoyed a solid season, earning a number of quality wins before going out in a tight League quarter-final.
However, they did have the consolation of their conquerors Castleknock going on to secure the League title.
The back row is a source of strength, captain Charlie Bramley and flankers Simon Neale and Sam Carter always in the zone.
In the back division, the centre combination of Matthew Bird and Aaron Neil is as good as there is in the competition.
The kingpins of schools rugby Blackrock will aim for an astounding 53rd Junior Cup.
Hooker and captain Matthew Wyse starts for the second year at this level, quite the achievement in a school of Rock’s depth of talent.
Although it is not said to be a vintage edition of the Williamstown school, coach Eoin Daly will be eager to guide them to their first outright win since 2018.
Newbridge College v Terenure College (Energia Park, KO 3.30pm).
Newbridge qualified for the cup from a very strong and evenly balanced group in the Leinster league, having been pipped into third place on the last day of competition.
It is a well-balanced side that relies on hard work and a strong skill set against sometimes bigger opponents.
The pack are led ably by their captain and returning Junior from last year’s squad, Jamie Bohan.
Others that have shown well throughout the year are Jonathan Fardy and Oscar Booth.
While, in the backs, Harry Mahon and Adam Kennedy, lead a very young, talented back line, who can cause a lot of damage when given space.
Coaches Harrison Brewer and Patrick Thornton both played on Terenure College’s last Junior Cup triumph in 2010.
This is an above-average squad, led by captain Luke McNiff who is returning for his second campaign.
A strong pack of forwards is bolstered by the return of number-eight Josh Mooney and second-row Luke McNiff.
Out-half Gareth Morgan provides a sure hand and boot, having also been there last year.
Vice-captain Ethan Balamash has proved to be very dangerous this season in an exciting backline with centre Niall Fallon and Jack Cooney, an explosive winger.
Thursday, 9 February
St Mary’s College v Gonzaga College (Energia Park, KO 1.30pm)
The St Mary’s College Junior Programme commenced back on the 6th of August with a squad of almost 50 players in training under head coach Sean Healy.
The squad is composed of 11 returning players from last year’s group which gives a fair degree of experience.
The captain for the upcoming campaign is Conor Cantwell, who will be supported by his vice captains Max Egan and Joe Christle all of whom have the experience of playing in a cup match last year.
The squad themselves have progressed well throughout the season and have consistently improved and developed their game with many notable results and near misses.
The rise in the excellence of Gonzaga continues unabated, their Juniors just edged out in the League final.
Tight-head prop Walter McMahon gives the rest of the pack someone to follow in the front row.
Number eight Bobby McCarthy is a constant source of confidence and go-forward.
Out the back, captain Bobby Colbert is as smart as he is decisive in his decision-making.
The overall package is convincing and the Sandford Road school will fear no one.
Clongowes Wood College v Cistercian College, Roscrea (Energia Park, KO 3.30pm)
It is 15 years since Conor Gilsenan last raised the Junior Cup for Clongowes Wood. Too long.
Director of Rugby Tomas O’Leary is doubling up as a head coach to a competitive bunch in Purple & White.
Captain Michael O’Sullivan has been chosen for his leadership, while centre Tom Walsh and second-row Charlie Hussey were both sprung from the bench last year.
This will be a particularly strong motivation for the Clane school to avenge last year’s last-minute quarter-final loss to the same opponents.
Last year’s finalists Cistercian Roscrea looked like a solid outfit in the Junior League in overcoming Kilkenny, Newbridge and Pres Bray on the way to a semi-final defeat to Gonzaga.
A lack of size in the forward eight is offset by an off-loading attacking game under the management team of Josh Rowland and Denis Rusu.
Tight-head Henry Maher and flanker James Miller started in the 2022 final, while loose forward Alex Kinsella-Garcia came off the bench.
In the backline, Ronan O’Sullivan is the only surviving starter with Aaron Moloney, Pablo Pascual and Harry Finlay growing in confidence and impact.
Friday, 10 February
Wesley College v Belvedere College (Energia Park, KO 3pm)
Wesley were competitive enough in the League, earning two valuable bonus-point wins over CBC Monkstown and CUS.
However, there were also harsh lessons learned from losses to Castleknock and Gonzaga, as it turned out the finalists.
They came close to making the semi-finals, losing out 18-16 to St Gerard’s in a quarter-final that could have gone either way.
Number eight and captain Isaac Reid sets the tone of the team with a high work rate and aggression.
Full-back Max Colbert provides flair for the back line as Wes’ strive to knock Belvo out of the Junior Cup for the second successive season.
Hard work is at the heart of Belvedere College’s bid to win the Junior Cup for the first time since 2005.
A powerful maul allied to smart and elusive back play has been the launching pad all season long.
Captain Alex Clarke will be bursting to make amends for last year’s first-round exit to Wesley.
The back-row forward shares the pain of that hour with tight-head prop Ryan Grant and centre Dylan Lord, the three starters left over this season.
St Gerard’s School v Pres Bray (Terenure College RFC, KO 2.30pm)
The St Gerard’s JCT squad have worked incredibly hard this year to improve on last year’s performance, which took them all the way to the quarter-final.
The latest St Gerard’s edition is based around speed, skill and an exciting expansive style of play.
Captain Patrick Hanley has been instrumental in guiding his side through a strong season, and like all good captains, is known to lead by example, never taking a step backwards.
The team will rely heavily on his leadership going into the cup and that of the four players involved in the Cup last year.
One of these Ronan Kelly has caused havoc all season. His strong running ability plays a huge part in their momentum.
Another with experience at this level is hard-grafting and skilful forward Mathew Fitzpatrick, a super-consistent performer.
Presentation College, Bray qualified for the first round by the skin of their teeth when lock Ronn Hogan plundered a late try against Naas CBS (17-13).
They ended up in the Fr Godfrey Cup due to an unexceptional League campaign, losing all four matches.
They took up the invitation to rebuild confidence in the Fr Godfrey by beating CBC Monkstown, Wilson’s Hospital and Naas.
They have quality in the form of prop Harry Graham, flanker Alex O’Dowd and number eight Rory Wrafter.
The backs have the potential to cause concern through centre Liam Mooney, their captain, and wing Joseph Byrne.
St Fintan’s High School v St Vincent’s Castleknock College (Clontarf FC, KO 2.30pm)
Castleknock enters the first round on the back of a confidence-boosting 15-12 win over Gonzaga College in a tight Leinster League final.
The forward pack is a competitive, aggressive unit, led by captain Ben O’Toole at number eight.
There is plenty of size and ability to compete with Jonathon Ginnety multi-tasking as the lineout caller and a primary carrier.
Out-half Cory O’Connor is the youngest of three brothers to play Cup rugby for ‘Knock.
He has a wide range of skills which are used to put his forwards in a position to succeed.
There are a number of threats along the backline, the elusive Matthew Brennan a standout in the midfield.
St Fintan’s won’t be found wanting, physically or technically, on the evidence of their Fr Godfrey campaign.
They improved through the competition by outmanoeuvring King’s Hospital (21-12), Ardscoil na Trionoide (52-19) and a fine Temple Carrig (35-19) in the semi-final.
The athletic pair of Michael Bolger and Adam Coffey started in the Junior Cup semi-final last year, bringing their experience to bear.
In addition, out-half Ben Barnes has progressed into a fine goal-kicker in a half-back partnership with Oisin Kelly, two more with game time from 2022.
