On a bright morning in Wicklow rugby club over 80 girls took part in an all-girls tag rugby…

With the girls participating coming from three local schools including Loreto bray, Dominican convent Wicklow and St Marys from Arklow. With all the schools participating in three 20 minute matches there was plenty of time for the players to show off their skill on the rugby pitch.

The skill level and rugby talent on show was of a very high standard and this is a credit to the coaches and teachers who have worked very closely with girls over the last number of weeks in preparation for this blitz. With girls ranging from 13 to 18 years of age playing in this blitz and with the Dominican convent team boasting three Leinster U18 players from the recent interprovincial completion, there was wide range of experience playing. With some girls on each team never playing before this gave them great experience and feel for rugby and with so many happy faces at the end its fair to say everyone enjoyed the day.

This event was jointly run between Arklow CCRO Barney Hines and Wicklow CCRO Shane McDonald and it is hoped that event will help both club community rugby officers attract more girls to come and play in their respective clubs
