Transition year students from four schools in Arklow took part in a tag rugby blitz that was exciting and entertaining for all involved…

The 160 students were divided into 20 teams of 8 and sorted into 4 groups of 5 teams. Each team had a mix of students from each school, allowing for the opportunity for students to get to know one another in a social and fun setting.

Each team was designated a county to represent and each grouped battled it out for a place in the semi finals. These were contested by Carlow, Wexford, Cork and Galway. After a tantalizing round of semi finals, it seemed that Galway and Carlow were destined to face off in the finals with Carlow pinching the glory by 3 points with a last minute try from Patricia O’Donnell of St. Mary’s Secondary school.

The day turned out to be a great success, with every student having fun and enjoying the games. The schools that took part were Arklow Community College, Arklow C.B.S., Gael Colaiste Na Mara, and St Mary’s girl’s school.

Many thanks to Noreen O’ Reilly for all her help in organizing the event and to the referees Sean Byrne, Joe Bulmer and Kelly Ann Conroy.
