There is no doubt that Ashbourne RFC had an exceptional season last year and as we head into the new season the club does from a great feel good base…

The fact that it is also the clubs 40th year adds an incentive into keeping the progress made going in the right direction. But it will be a very tough season, so but one the club is looking forward to.

The celebrations kicked off in style when Leinster Rugby came to do training session with us on the 8th of August. A great day was had by all. Next up will be the clubs Ultimate Family Day on the 31st August (starting at 2.00pm) in the club which will be a great day out. It is a day for young and old, as well as people who are part of the club but also for those who might be interested in joining in.

A lot of effort has gone into the arrangements and the club is expecting a good turnout. It is very much based on the Leinster/IRFU Club Open day with opportunities to register for the season for the Youth and Mini section, boys and girls, network with club members and make new friends and get to know your local community club. There is also a lot of entertainment on the day and a good day is guaranteed to all.

As well as the Leinster Trophies from last season and the RBS 6 Nations Cup, Leo the Lion and Mr Tayto will be there to welcome everybody. These cups will look great with the two Provincial Towns Cups and the McGee and Dib 1B cups as well!

The club was founded in 1974 and I would imagine that the ‘founding fathers’ could not have imagined what the club has now achieved. The club facilities have a developed a long way since those early days and work is ongoing on a new artificial training area which is being developed on 2.2 acres that the club acquired recently. A Sports Capital Grant is helping to ensure that the work is completed and this will further enhance the facilities.

As part of the clubs commitment to the community the Ultimate Family Day on the 31st August is seen as a day for the club but also a day that says thank you to the local community who have been very supportive over the years to the club. The Fittest Family Competition will be one of the main features and the rumour is that Jeff Mahon wants to win this as well! Club Captain Rory Gleeson is organising the tug of war and there are many other games and events being planned.

We look forward to seeing you there on the 31st of August with the kick off planned for 2.00pm. More events are planned with the Ashbourne Gala Ball being planned for Saturday the 1st of November with more details to follow
