The Ashbourne and districts Primary School Tag Rugby Blitz was held at the Milltown grounds of Ashbourne RFC recently from 10am to 1pm…

After the torrential downpour of the previous two days it was a credit to the facilities of Ashbourne RFC that the day went as planned.

Four schools attended with 120 children participating in the 10-a-side matches played on the new 3g all-weather astro turf surface at the club. In these conditions it is a great addition to club amenities. The children thoroughly enjoyed their day with games played in fine spirit and just a touch of competitiveness.

The blitz was the culmination of a six-week Tag Rugby Programme delivered by Leinster CCRO Scott Broughton, who was ably assisted in refereeing duties by fellow CCRO for Ratoath, Darren Kenna.

The parents and teachers were treated to tea and coffee courtesy of Ashbourne Secretary Bill Duggan who assisted on the day. All participants were presented with Leinster merchandise and a poster of the Ireland World Cup squad. Who knows but we might just see some of these budding players that graced the turf at Ashbourne RFC on an Ireland poster one day!

Schools attending were:  St. Finian’s NS – Clonalvy, Gael Scoil Na Cille – Ashbourne, Kilcoskin NS – Coolquay and Rathfeigh NS – Rathfeigh.
