Portarlington RFC recently held its largest ever rugby blitz for 5th and 6th class girls’ primary schools in the area.
Under the stewardship of Portarlington CCRO (Club Community Rugby Officer) Paidi Mahon, more than 200 girls from local primary schools (Presentation Primary Portarlington, St Evins NS Monasterevin and Portlaoise Educate Together NS) fielded 18 teams in a busy schedule of 45 games.
Leinster Rugby WDO (Women’s Development Officer) Jennie Bagnall, who was in attendance on the day, described the event as the “biggest ever” run by the Leinster Rugby Branch exclusively for primary school girls.
The high standard of play was evident on the day and was a testament to the preparation put in through the CCRO programme in these schools over the last number of months.
All the girls had a great experience of rugby on the day and left with flyers detailing upcoming events for girls mini and youth players at Portarlington RFC. As part of their ‘Give It A Try’ initiative Portarlington RFC are aiming to boost numbers for the club’s U12 girls side and will be hosting the Leinster Rugby U10 Girls Blitz later this season.
Many thanks must go to all the teachers and to Paul Brady and JohnJoe McIlwrath, the CCROs from neighbouring clubs Portlaoise RFC and Cill Dara RFC, for their help on the day. Thanks also to the large team of Youths & Minis coaches and Transition Year work experience students who refereed the games and ensured the smooth flow of proceedings throughout.
Portarlington Minis Rugby train from 10am Saturday mornings and 6.30pm on Wednesday evenings. For more details on training and on getting rugby into your school, please contact Portarlington RFC CCRO Paidi Mahon at PortarlingtonCCRO@leinsterrugby.ie.
