It was ‘déjà vu day’ at Donnybrook for Coolmine last week when they defeated Barnhall 21-5 in the final of the Winters Cup…
Another Tuesday night and another piece of silverware for the Trophy Cabinet courtesy of the Super 3’s. They beat Barnhall 21-5 in a long hard fought battle that only swung Coolmine’s way in the final quarter.
Barnhall scored the first try after 12 minutes against the run of play and Coolmine managed to go in at half time one point ahead thanks to two converted penalties courtesy of Hugh Martin.
Thirteen minutes into the second half and a loose ball inside the Coolmine half was kicked along the ground by Karl Coombes into open space bounced nicely back into his hands leaving him a short run in for Coolmine’s first try. The conversion pushed the gap to 13-5. Coolmine continued to dominate and create chances but failed convert their superiority into points.
A drop goal after 25 minutes from Hugh Martin stretched the gap further. Coolmine pinned Barnhall into their 22 for the last few minutes of the game and were rewarded with a late try deep into injury time from scrum half substitute Saoirse O’Dunlaing.
