Edenderry women’s rugby team are AIL newcomers and currently compete in AIL Division 2 Central where we are sitting mid-table half way through the league campaign…
This is a massive achievement for a team that were only established in September 2010. Starting as beginners in the Leinster Development League in 2010, Edenderry quickly progressed to the Leinster Division 4 League.
In Division 4, through hard work and massive support from the committee and supporters in Edenderry Rugby Club , the team moved from strength to strength competing in the League and Cup Finals. Winning the League Final meant promotion, a huge achievement in their first year.
Promoted to Divison 3, Edenderry had to compete against much stronger, longer established teams and did fantastically well to win every league game that year. In the League Final however, Edenderry were narrowly defeated. With this on the mind of each and every player Edenderry were undefeated in the Cup and brought the Leinster Cup to Edenderry in their second season.
The 2012/2013 season saw further promotion for the team into Leinster Division 1. Although the team was weakened by loss of personnel through emigrations, Edenderry maintained top of the table position all year and won the league final. Given this was Edenderry’s first season in Division 1 this was a massive accomplishment for the team, management and club.
Following the success of the previous years, Edenderry were promoted to AIL in 2013. Half way through the season, sitting mid table with wins in their last few games Edenderry are going well in this tough league and continue to strengthen, hoping to repeat previous years achievements.
Although we take our rugby seriously on the pitch, off the pitch Edenderry Ladies have been a huge asset to the club through fundraising for charity and the club, training our emerging U18’s girls team and mini’s on a Saturday morning throughout the winter.
Edenderry women’s team train twice weekly with games most weekends. Membership is not confined to the immediate area but to a large catchment area with players from as far as Roscommon and Tyrone, to name a few. We always welcome new team players both experience and beginners. Contact Gillian Hoey at gillianhoey97@gmail.com for more information.
