As the rugby season draws to a close for many now, the focus will be starting to switch to summer rugby, and it’s not just Jamie Heaslip, Rob Kearney, Sean O’Brien and the rest of the Leinster players that will be looking at July and August with anticipation to honing their skills with the World Cup looming.
The countdown for summer is well and truly underway and the places on the Bank of Ireland Leinster Rugby summer camps are also in countdown mode with some of the venues showing big numbers already.
There’s no better place for children to improve their rugby skills over the summer holidays than on one of camps and just like Leinster’s Irish players who will also be in their own camp working on their preparation for the upcoming World Cup, it provides an ideal opportunity for the Mini rugby players to spend a week learning and practicing for their new season also.
With the camp content now split into the three different stages of Mini Rugby this allows the players to work on specific areas that they will use next season.
Billy Phelan, the summer camp manager, added “This is something that I introduced last year where I broke down the content into the three separate phases of Mini Rugby, and while keeping it all fun and enjoyable for the players I wanted them to go back to their clubs or join a club for the new players with something that adds to their game. For example at the Mini 3 area (U10-U12’s) I have added more decision based games where we use activities to develop the skills they need and keep as much as possible to coaching through the game. The whole idea is that they get to practice through a series of progressions from Monday to Friday with each day having a specific theme to lead into the next.”
