On Valentine’s Day four girl’s team from Westmanstown, Navan, Dundalk and Boyne descended on the RDS to play during the Leinster V Dragons game at half time…
It may not have been everybody’s idea of a romantic St. Valentine’s night date, but to the girls of Navan and Westmanstown Rugby Clubs, the opportunity to share the RDS stage with their Leinster heroes will be hard to beat: the teams played an exhibition game during the interval of the RaboDirect PRO12 match.
To use the popular phrase from football punditry this was a ‘proper’ game of rugby with everything you would expect of the male game…strong tackling, robust competition in the contact area, strong running and, without doubt, good game sense.
Fingal Community Rugby Officer was delighted with the performance. ‘Lorna O’Connor and Eddie Fallon have done great work with the Westmanstown Girls and they are very lucky that they have Woman’s team to aspire to but I am equally lucky in that I could not ask for a better group of trail blazers for Skerries’ female rugby than those who played tonight. Navan won the game with a score of 20-5.
Dundalk Girls Team also travelled to Dublin to play at half time against Boyne RFC. The game was a draw with one try a piece, Dundalk’s Deborah Malone running in a fantastic try much to the delight of the crowd and her team mates.
