Every Saturday in Skerries, the girls train in the Club grounds and numbers have grown steadily as there are now 30 girls, from ages 9-16 training with the Club…
Much of this growth is down to the efforts of Club Community Rugby Officer, Michael Woods, who has assiduously driven the tag rugby programme in local schools, especially encouraging the full participation of girls in end of term blitzes.
The skill level of the girls has shown real progression and this can be attributed, not only, to the diligence of the girls, but also, the hard work of their coaches, Paula Murphy, Donna Griffin and Liz Healy who have become IRFU accredited at Stage One level in the past year.
Recently, the Under 12 girls played an exhibition match during the half time of the Skerries Senior Team’s All Ireland league fixture against UCC. This gave the girls an opportunity to display their skills in front of the sizable Holmpatrick crowd. Seventeen girls participated on the day, many wearing their new pink Club jerseys and they impressed all with their rugby playing skills but mostly it was their enthusiasm that made it such a joy for the spectators who gave them a vigorous ovation.
Plans are now being made to give the girls their first inter club fixture against Suttonians.
