Gorey Community School 32 St. Gerard’s School 17

A commanding second-half performance from Gorey Community School was enough for them to progress to the second round of the Bank of Ireland Fr Godfrey Cup on Tuesday.

While the final score makes the win appear routine, it didn’t all go to plan for the Wexford school.

An early try for Josh Wyse, which he converted himself, had St Gerard’s very briefly in the lead in Wicklow RFC’s grounds.

That was as good as it got for Gerard’s as they quickly found themselves behind. The scoreboard read 12-7 in favour of Gorey by the 10th minute.

There was only one more score in the rest of the half, another seven-pointer for Gorey, which gave them a 19-7 lead at the break.

After the restart, the script went very much to plan for Gorey and they pushed further away to clinch a second-round berth.

Gerard’s battled until the end but were unable to reduce the deficit any further as Gorey moved on to the next round with a 32-17 win.
