Mullingar Rugby Club hosted a blitz for 4th class students from local schools…
Almost 200 children arrived at the Mullingar Rugby Club grounds with great anticipation to show off their rugby skills at this blitz for 4th class students.
David Farrelly, the CCRO for the Mullingar area who has been visiting schools in the area in September, invited a number schools to this blitz.
The conditions were perfect for some great rugby and perfect for the players as they displayed all their newly learnt skills. The referees helping out on the day were very impressed with the enthusiasm and talent shown.
The emphasis was on skills and fair play rather than winning and consequently this meant more players were involved in games. Each game lasted 10 minutes and every school got at least six matches, so there was plenty of game time for all.
After the games every player got some Leinster Rugby memorabilia as a reward for all their efforts and treats supplied by the Club. The teachers were delighted with the organisation of the event and thought it was brilliant to see that participation was more important than winning. Because of this each school made sure that all children were given a chance to play.
Coole National School was voted by the refs as the best school taking part and were awarded an extra prize for their efforts.
A special thank you to the referees Claire O’Brien, Jennifer Farrelly and Sheila Farrelly.
