Greystones RFC recently held two information evenings at Dr Hickey Park as part of the preparation for the new season…

These sessions were primarily aimed at the Youth Section and we were also delighted to welcome Team Managers and Coaches from local schools, hockey and GAA.

For the first event we were delighted to welcome Paul McNaughton (Ireland Team Manager) to talk to the group about the challenges of team management in running the Ireland international team. Paul also gave great insight into the role of the team manager at club level pointing out that this is not just a “bag carrying” role but one of importance in running the team and that they should be involved in decision making regarding team selection etc.

The role is also one of support for the head coach to allow they focus on the on skills training and match preparation. Gary Nolan (Youth Section Chairman) gave a detailed presentation on the role and responsibilities of a Team Manager. Gary announced that Greystones will be hosting a coach’s development course delivered by the Leinster.

The second evening in the series was presented by Reggie Corrigan former Leinster and Ireland player who in now the head coach of Greystones. In a very relaxed and informal environment Reggie shared his experiences of working under different coaches as a player and his transition into a coaching role.

Reggie opened the floor to questions and there was open discussion around challenges the coaches were experiencing and solutions to them. The key message from Reggie was “planning and honesty”.
