Leinster Rugby moved three points ahead of reigning champions Scarlets at the top of Guinness PRO14 Conference B with a 20-13 win over the Welsh side at the RDS Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Scarlets started the better with a try inside the opening 10 minutes from full-back Johnny McNicholl converted by Dan Jones.

The visitors continued to threaten out wide, but it was Leinster who would score next through left wing James Lowe.

After a lineout maul at the right touchline, the ball was spread left. Adam Byrne found Lowe with a big pass out wide and the wing showed his strength to finish.

Lowe got his second before half-time after some good work from Scott Fardy, first, the Aussie lock intercepted a Scarlets lineout ball and then blocked down an attempted clearance. Leinster recycled the ball and Lowe finished in the corner.

Leinster made the best possible start to the second half with Luke McGrath scoring his side’s third try after Jordan Larmour and Lowe combined on the left to send the scrum-half over. Ciarán Frawley kicked a tough conversion from the left touchline, his first points on his senior Leinster debut.

Jones kicked a penalty to cut Leinster’s lead to seven, but a Frawley penalty made it a 10-point lead with 10 minutes to go.

However, Scarlets took a losing bonus point from the game when Jones converted a penalty with the final kick of the match.

Leinster Rugby returns to the RDS Arena this Friday for a historic meeting with the Southern Kings (KO 7.35pm). Tickets are on sale now from €23/10.
