Leinster Rugby started the 2020/21 Heineken Champions Cup with a bonus-point win away to Montpellier on Saturday.
Josh van der Flier got the opening try inside the first five minutes for Leo Cullen’s men, supplemented by a Ross Byrne penalty shortly after.
The hosts narrowed the margin with a Benoît Paillaugue penalty but Leinster struck again with a try from Ciarán Frawley, making his first European start, after a smart offload from Rhys Ruddock.
Paillaugue added another penalty but when a cross-field kick from Byrne bounced straight into the arms of Dave Kearney, who applied the finish, Leinster’s lead stood at 14 come half-time.
A third Paillaugue penalty was the only score of the second half until Dan Leavy, making his return to European action, secured the bonus-point for Leinster with 12 minutes remaining.
Jimmy O’Brien then capped off a brilliant evening with a fifth and final try for Leinster on his European debut.
