When local rivals, Newbridge and Cill Dara, lock horns at 3.00 p.m. this Sunday in Rosetown…
There will be more at stake than just Leinster League Division 1A points, both clubs will also be battling for the Jon Conlan Memorial Trophy.
Jon Conlan died of cancer in January 2009, aged just 29. Jon’s roots were firmly in Cill Dara Rugby club – his grandfather being a founding member and his father and uncle players with the club – but after he left Newbridge College, he decided to join Newbridge RFC along with his school friends.
Soon after his tragic death, both clubs decided to commemorate Jon’s life by initiating an annual contest, the first of which was held in September 2009. Newbridge are the current holders of the memorial trophy.
The Jon Conlan Memorial Trophy will be won this year by the club with the highest aggregate score from this season’s two Leinster League games. Cill Dara goes into Sunday’s game ahead by their 19-6 winning score from last November’s game in Beechpark.
With Cill Dara looking to cement a top-four finish in the league and Newbridge battling relegation, the added prize of the Jon Conlan Memorial Trophy and local bragging rights makes this Sunday’s game in Newbridge RFC utterly unmissable.
