On a very wet and cold Thursday last, St.Mel’s College and St. Mary’s Drogheda junior teams put on a fantastic display of running and free flowing rugby…
Despite the conditions this was an end to end thriller with both sides taking the lead at vital stages. The Longford side showed great determination through Captain Brian Harte and out-half Paddy Duggan in both defence and attack and it was to be their day as they pushed on with two excellent tries in the last ten minutes to win 29-17. They now await their opponents for next week’s decider as Colaiste Chill Mhantain and Pres De La Salle Bagenalstown play the other semi-final this week.
Longford’s CCRO Stephen Coy said ‘the guys are really looking forward to the challenge and it is great for a school that prides itself in its GAA traditions to be reaching a final in a Leinster Rugby competition. This is a team made up of a lot of new players who only took up the sport since starting in St. Mel’s blended with a little experience of some players who have come through the development programme in Longford RFC. It looks good for the future of Longford rugby with Moyne CS also having success this year and an influx of players from both schools to the underage structures of the club’.
