On a crisp sunny morning in Longford RFC recently over 160 5th and 6th class students from six of Longford’s primary schools competed in up to five Tag rugby matches each…
The six schools which took part were Killoe N.S., St. Mary’s Drumlish, Kenagh N.S. and Ballinalee N.S. while Aughnagarron and Clondra N.S. both took part in their inaugural Tag rugby blitz.
Children and teachers alike enjoyed the newly opened and wonderful facilities at Longford RFC and both Aughnagarron and Clondra national schools have since taken up the IRFU ‘Play Rugby’ Programme with Leinster CCRO Stephen Coy.
Stephen was delighted with how the day panned out and is looking forward to his next blitz in late March. A great thank you must go to the Longford Youths section of the club who supplied all the players with a little goody bag for their efforts and some fine hot lunch for teachers and parents in their new clubhouse before they headed back to school.
The day was a wonderful success, thanks to the encouragement and help of the teachers and principals of all the participating schools and the children who brought massive amounts of enjoyment and enthusiasm to the game.
The talent spoke for itself and there is certainly lots of potential for youths, men’s and women of Longford Rugby Club.
A big thank you must go to Leinster CRO Steve Coy and Longford ladies players Yvonne Dowd and Karen Lennon for their great help on the day.
