Leinster Rugby are continuously improving the rugby experience for local club and school players through their commitment to coach development; the aim of which is to provide high quality and appropriately qualified coaches for every player across Leinster.

This season, almost 800 coaches have participated in the 28 coaching courses offered across 10 of the 12 counties in Leinster.

In the Introduction to Mini Rugby Coaching, 270 coaches participated across 10 courses, while coaching stages 1-3, which covers age groups from under-9 to junior adult, had 524 coaches across 18 courses (eight Stage One, seven Stage two and three Stage Three).

Notwithstanding the great quantity of these coach development offerings, the overriding focus of Leinster Rugby’s team of local Coach Developers is on each offering being quality-driven, coach-centred and impact orientated.

Outside of formal coaching courses, we also offer a range of bespoke coach development initiatives for coaches at all levels including (but not limited to):

  • Stage 1 TackleSMART workshops
  • Stage 2 ScrumSMART workshops
  • Stage 2 Game-Based workshops
  • Stage 3 Technical/Tactical/Coaching-Process seminars & workshops
  • Stage 4 Coaching Communities of Practice
  • Coach Mentoring and Apprentice Coach training

In addition to this, the Coach Development Officers continue to work in collaboration with St Mary’s University, Twickenham, to establish a coaching methodology framework and to develop an evidence-based coach learning programme rooted in acknowledged, advanced and emerging theories of applied coaching practice.
