Leinster Rugby are pleased to launch a two-day coaching clinic at Syracuse University, led by Seán O’Brien and Leinster’s development staff, on Saturday and Sunday, 5-6 August 2023.  The camp is open to all coaches of male and female age-grade, college and adult rugby athletes.

Participants at the camp can expect a comprehensive coaching programme designed to teach coaches how to best develop age grade, college and adult athlete skillset and game understanding.

Attendee coaches will learn key technical and tactical strategies aligned with Leinster Rugby’s “From The Ground Up” coaching model. Coaches will be challenged both technically and tactically through a game-based approach on the pitch and will have the opportunity to improve their coaching abilities and learn new strategies to enhance player performance.

The overall goal of Leinster’s coaching experience is to provide a well-rounded coaching approach that combines tactical and technical proficiency with strong values for coaching success.

The camp will incorporate the coaching methods and philosophies that are the foundation of the Leinster Rugby player development pathway, and have made Leinster Rugby one of the world’s best professional clubs, using a game-based approach to develop players skills in four areas; passing, tackling, kicking and decision-making, for all positions on the field.

By integrating advanced tactics and strategies, emphasising attacking shapes, defensive structures, set-piece plays, and game management, the camp aims to enhance the coaches’ understanding of the modern game and give them the tools to translate those tactics to their teams.

The approach emphasises values such as teamwork, commitment, integrity, and communication to create a positive and supportive environment.

The Leinster Rugby Coaching Camp will be led by Leinster Rugby’s Contact Skills Coach Seán O’Brien, along with Leinster Rugby coaching staff. These include, Coach and Player Development Officers, Colin O’Hare, Ken Moore and John Bagnall, who collectively have over 48 years coaching experience, working across the province of Leinster.

Leinster Rugby’s Coach and Player Development Officer, Colin O’Hare said, “We are delighted to establish our first of many coaching camps and workshops, in our newly formed partnership with Syracuse University.

“This two-day camp aims to provide a comprehensive coaching approach that combines tactical and technical expertise with strong values, setting the stage for coaching success. This holistic approach ensures that coaches also develop essential qualities that contribute to their overall coaching process.

“It is envisaged over the season ahead that other initiatives will take place based on our rugby model.”
