Leinster missed out on a spot in the knock-out stages last season having been beaten twice by Wasps in the RDS Arena and in the Ricoh Arena.
However Leo Cullen’s men have bounced back in impressive fashion this season and topped Pool 4 of the Champions Cup in a pool that featured Castres, Montpellier and Northampton and scored 31 tries in the process, thus ending the six round pool stages with the best offensive record of all teams.
They are currently top of the Guinness PRO12 after 16 rounds and are the leading try scorers in that competition also with 69 tries to their name ahead of the visit of Scarlets to the RDS this Saturday (Kick Off: 7.35pm).
That good form has been rewarded on the international stage, with 15 Leinster players today named in Joe Schmidt’s Ireland squad for the remaining two rounds of the 6 Nations including Ireland vice-captain Jamie Heaslip, Tadhg Furlong, Cian Healy, Robbie Henshaw, Rob Kearney and Johnny Sexton.
For their part Wasps finished top of Pool 2 ahead of Toulouse, Connacht and Zebre and had a similar record to Leinster winning four, drawing one and losing one of their six games with a very impressive 28 tries from six games.
They are also top of their domestic league with 12 wins and one draw from their 16 Aviva Premiership games this season and again similar to Leinster have crossed the whitewash on 64 occasions.
With international stars such as James Haskell, Kurtley Beale, Danny Cipriani, Elliot Daly, Nathan Hughes, Joe Launchbury and Willie Le Roux in their squad and of course the returning Leinster trio of Marty Moore, Jimmy Gopperth and Brendan Macken, it promises to be an intriguing battle between two of the top teams in the PRO12 and the Premiership.
