Leinster and Ireland star Luke Fitzgerald has backed the ‘2010 Rith’ – a 1600 km relay-run which will begin in Belfast on 9th March and finish in Galway city on St. Patrick’s Day…

Thousands will run “ar son na Gaeilge” with the specially designed baton which will hold a secret message from the President of Ireland, which will not be revealed until the end of the run. Rith 2010 is partly funded by Foras na Gaeilge.

Rith 2010 is the first event of its kind in Ireland and it’s modeled on the Basque Country’s Korrika which has been established since 1980. Last year over 600, 000 people took part in Korrika which is accompanied by music, cultural activities and thousands of spectators along the way.

The objective of Rith 2010 is also to raise money which will be invested into Irish language projects throughout the country.

“We’re very excited about this event,” says Siobhán Seoighe, Events Manager, Rith 2010. “We’ve seen how the Basque Country celebrate their language and culture in such a healthy way. So we’ve decided to bring the equivalent Rith 2010 to Ireland for the first time. This is a real celebration where thousands of people will run to celebrate the Irish language whilst raising funds that will be re-invested back into Irish language projects throughout the country,” she said.

Community groups, school groups, clubs and individuals are all invited to buy a kilometer and take part at any stage of the 1,600 km course.

There are many ways to take part – all the information you need is on www.rith.ie

As well as the run itself, there will be plenty of other events happening along the route as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge which will be happening at the same time.

Fógairt na Sonraí Rith 2010

Tosóidh Rith 2010 – féile agus ollrith ar son na Gaeilge ar an 9 Márta i mBéal Feirste agus leanfaidh sé ar aghaidh go dtí Lá Fhéile Pádraig áit a gcríochnóidh sé i gcathair na Gaillimhe.

Tá súil go mbeidh na mílte ag rith ar son na Gaeilge áit a mbeidh bata sealaíochta á n-iompar acu ina mbeidh teachtaireacht ó Uachtarán na hÉireann istigh ann. Léifear amach an teachtaireacht seo ag deireadh an reatha ar Lá Fhéile Pádraig.

Is slí úrnua é Rith 2010 chun teanga agus cultúr na Gaeilge a cheiliúradh go feiceálach i bpobail ar fud na hÉireann agus airgead a bhailiú d’fhorbairt na Gaeilge ag an am céanna. Tá Rith 2010 maoinithe i bpáirt ag Foras na Gaeilge.

Tagann an smaoineamh taobh thiar de Rith 2010 ón bhféile Korrika a tharlaíonn gach dara bliain i dTír na mBascach ó na hochtóidí. An bhliain seo caite ghlac 600,000 duine páirt i Korrika agus bíonn ceol agus imeachtaí cultúrtha lárnach sa bhféile chéanna.

“Táimid ar bís faoin imeacht úrnua seo,” a dúirt Siobhán Seoighe, Bainisteoir Imeachta, Rith 2010. “Tá sé feicthe againn mar a dhéanann Tír na mBascach ceiliúradh ar a gcuid teanga agus cultúr go feiceálach agus shocraíomar é a thriail anseo go hÉireann. Is ceiliúradh é seo ina mbeidh na mílte duine in ann a mbród a léiriú i leith na Gaeilge” a dúirt sí.

Is féidir le grúpaí pobail, scoileanna, clubanna, nó daoine aonair páirt a ghlacadh i Rith 2010 ar iliomad bealaí – téigh chuig www.rith.ie

Rachaidh an t-airgead ar fad ó Rith 2010 go Ciste Rith, a chuirfidh maoiniú ar fáil amach anseo do thograí Gaeilge ar fud na tíre.

Chomh maith leis an rith é féin, beidh neart imeachtaí ar siúl timpeall na tíre mar chuid de Sheachtain na Gaeilge a bheidh ag tarlú ag an am céanna. Mar sin, ceannaigh ciliméadar, tacaigh leis an nGaeilge agus tar amach le linn na coicíse – beidh neart craic, ceol agus, ar ndóigh, Rith i gceist.
