The panel trained for 90 minutes in balmy conditions before adjourning to the clubhouse where they were greeted by throngs of supporters and the squad, amongst them the Lions contingent as well as the recent recruits each of whom happily mixed with supporters young and old, signing memorabilia, answering questions and posing for photographs with the players and the Heineken Cup trophy.

This hugely successful open day training session, followed swiftly after over 3,000 packed Wicklow RFC last week, was another important step in the province’s preparations and northside Dubliner Cian Healy voiced his delight at the turnout.

He said: “Growing up in Clontarf I know how fanatical the support is for the team in northside Dublin and right across the province. The numbers who made the trip out to the estuary road in Malahide were staggering and it has given all the players a real boost ahead of the start of the pre-season games.

“It’s not always possible to get out to clubs during the season because of the heavy schedule of matches, but all of us have enjoyed visiting clubs across the province at the Centra summer camps, and today’s visit, like Wicklow last week, was another great experience.

“There was a real intensity to training and we want to take that momentum with us coming into the games against Nice and London Irish so that we hit the ground running against the Scarlets in the Magners League.”

Leinster Rugby would like to thank the volunteers, staff and supporters in Malahide RFC for their hospitality…
