Old Belvedere beat Malahide 22-17 at Estuary Road last Saturday in a veterans’ game organised to honour the memory of Michael Campbell, a member of both clubs, who died tragically last year…
Michael’s popularity was reflected in the large crowd that included his wife Ciara, daughters Lisa, Carrie and Alanna, as well as brothers Ollie, Stuart and sister Mona. Ex-international Ollie kicked off and managed to remain on the pitch for the first of the three periods of 20 minutes – not bad for someone who played his last game around a quarter of a century ago.
Old Belvedere President and captain-for-the-day Steve Tormey received a specially commissioned trophy from Alanna – the Michael Campbell Memorial Cup.
Malahide RFC have insisted that this becomes an annual event, to ensure they have an opportunity for revenge but also ensuring a regular opportunity to celebrate the life of a loyal team-mate and great friend.
