On Friday, 27 May, Leinster Rugby took over a sizeable section of Marlay Park to welcome back events being hosted on a large scale for the region.

Seventeen schools confirmed to join the chaos on the day with over 1,500 students attending from fourth, fifth and sixth class.

Schools arrived early and started finding a home within the area where the 23 pitches were laid out.

We had a cohort of students from De La Salle College and the King’s Hospital running the pitches being supported by the Leinster Rugby community staff.

Whistles rang out and the games started, the players started throwing the ball around in a style of confidence and friendship.  They listened to the referees and took all decision on board.

The buzz across the pitches was increased by the sun shining brightly for the full day and they students happy to be part of the event.

Parents/guardians of the students took breaks from work to visit the games during the day and patrons of the park commented on how fantastic it was to see so many students back out and enjoying sport on such a scale.

Some parents/guardians even joined their school for the day, assisting in making sure the teams were at their pitch ready to go.

The feedback from the players on the day was excellent. The teachers and support staff left smiling and the Leinster Rugby community staff left shattered but happy to see the students having such fun.

Thank you to the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council parks department and the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown sports partnership in granting us permission to use the park.
