Monkstown FC, with a proud tradition and significant contribution to Irish Rugby, will this year celebrate 130 years in existence…
A strong and experienced management team has been assembled to push for promotion to Division 1A in this historic year for the Club.
David Mahon is the new 1 st Team Head Coach. Mahon learned his rugby at Newbridge College , and, after a playing career in Bective Rangers, returned to finish with Newbridge RFC.
Having started his managerial career with the Bective Under-20s, he then coached Tullow to promotion from Division 3 in 1999. In 2004 he joined Newbridge RFC a relationship that was run right up until the end of 2012-13. He was also appointed as head coach to the Leinster Juniors in November 2012.
Work for next season is well under way, with Monkstown FC also announcing the appointment of Adrian Hanley as forward’s player coach. Adrian is former Irish Youth International who learned his trade at Buccaneers RFC graduating to the 1 st XV. In 2009, Adrian Joined Tullamore RFC and his time there culminated in a fabulous season this year winning a record five trophies. “I am hugely excited about this opportunity. Monkstown are a sleeping giant in the Leinster league and hopefully this season we can get the club heading in the right direction.”
In addition to their two new coaches, Monkstown have also appointed Brian Hogan as Director of Rugby. Brian, a former 1 st team Captain at Monkstown, will understand what it takes to be successful in the Leinster league having been a member of the Monkstown team that won the Leinster League in 2006.
“We are delighted with the appointments of David and Adrian. Hopefully their experience of success within the Leinster League can be brought to bear on our league campaign next season.”
The final piece of the jigsaw sees the appointment of Padraig O’Donnell as manager to the 1 st XV. Padraig is a native of Mullingar but is also a former manager of the Buccaneers Under-20’s. His thorough knowledge of the Leinster Junior scene should prove to be an invaluable asset next season.
With these appointments in mind, and a historical milestone for the club, it is with great optimism that Monkstown looks forward to the coming season. Roll on September.
