Navan RFC recently played host to St Patricks Clasical school and Belvedere College in a 10 a side friendly blitz…

Sixty 1st year students from either school got the opportunity to play games of rugby, and experience a match situtation for the first time.

Since there was such a fantastic turnout at lunchtimes rugby sessions in St Pats, (up to 50 students on a good day) and such a large demand for games by the students, the 10 a side blitz was the perfect situation in which to allow every single student to play a game a of rugby regardless of abiltiy.

The whole thing kicked off at 2.30pm with all the teams playing three periods of 10 mins with regular swopping of players from either sides on the all pitches. Both sets of coaches used this opportunity to observe all of the players of various abilities, and use the day as a developental day in which pick out their A and B sides and look at students for developmental sides. All of the St Pat’s sides played their hearts out and were more than a match for the Belvedere teams.

Also playing on the day were the St Pat’s Junior team and the Skerries Junior team. This match was also a friendly, with St Pat’s winning the challenege in the end.

The day was a fantastic success with all of the 1st year students regardless of abilties getting to play a game of rugby. The whole afternoon’s events proved to be very popular by the students and the Coaches from both schools, and a return visit to Belvedere in the comings weeks has been arranged. Everybody is looking forward to it.

Thanks to Navan RFC for use of their fanatastic facilities, to Paul Beggy (Navan R.F.C Director of rugby) for Refereeing the Junior match, Leon Jordann (Navan Head Coach) for his help around the club house and to Kevin Hourihane (St Patrick’s head P.E teacher and rugby coach) for his great help in organising the whole day and to the Belvedere College SJ coaching staff and players.
