Rugby in Ballymun and Finglas has taken a huge step forward with the announcement that Unidare Rugby Club is moving to a new home at Balcurris Park, Ballymun…

The Club will now be playing all their home matches in the heart of Ballymun and as well as training there every Tuesday and Thursday at 7.30pm.

Announcing the move Club Chairman, Kevin Furey, stated; ‘This is a huge step forward for both Unidare RFC and the local community. The Club has worked closely with Ballymun Regeneration Ltd, Leinster Rugby and local schools to promote rugby within the locality and the success of our efforts can be seen in the huge turnout at inter-school tournaments at primary school level and that senior schools like Trinity Comprehensive were now fielding a rugby team.’

Founded in 1958, Unidare RFC was originally a team comprised of workers from the Unidare factory on Jamestown Road, Finglas. Following the factory’s closure the Club led a nomadic existence and was most recently playing and training in the Dublin City University sports grounds on Ballymun Road.

The Club currently fields a senior team, a veterans and development team and has a blossoming youth structure. The Club’s youth team were featured in RTE’s ‘Capital D’ programme in 2008 and many of the featured players have progressed to playing for the senior team.

Commenting on the announcement, Jack Hanratty, Leinster Rugby’s Community Rugby Officer expressed his delight stating that: ‘With Unidare now having a base in Ballymun the future looks great for rugby in the area and the rugby club.’
