Oaklands Community College Rugby Team Edenderry, made their own bit of school history last week, by fielding a school team in the senior Development Cup for the very first time…

Rugby was introduced into the school in 2011 by Edenderry RFC CCRO Patsy Gorman. Initially the school started with a first year team playing challenge matches against other schools. This then evolved into these players fielding in the Junior Development shield then the cup last season and eventually moving in to the Senior Development Cup this season. This has been an eventful few seasons with the schools players and has seen a definite progression in ability and skill level.

The senior team had their first outing in the cup against Moate CS away, this was an evenly contested affair and displayed some great running rugby from both sides, with Oaklands narrowly winning in the end by 32-28. Next up for Oaklands was a home fixture against a very strong side and former shield winners Tullamore College and unfortunately in what was a one sided affair, despite Oaklands putting on a very brave performance, Tullamore College ran out easy winners.

Oaklands put on a brave display and crossed the line three times for tries on the day. Oaklands senior team now await the shield competition draw and hopefully will have a game or two in this. The school has fully supported the rugby team since its conception and take great pride in now being able to compete at both senior and junior level. CCRO Patsy Gorman, Team Manager Ciaran Petit and the team wish Richie Parishe, one of the senior players a speedy recovery from his recent injury. Onwards and upwards for Oaklands CC in rugby.
