Old Belvedere J1’s 36 – 12 UCD

With the development of a new Division 5 in Leinster League next season. 4th and 5th place in the Division 4 league had a play off to decide who would be relegated and who would stay up in Division 4.

Old Belvedere J1’s who were placed 4th in the league table found themselves battling with 5th place UCD against relegation.

The J1 side that were formed in 2010 showed great determination and skill against a seasoned UCD team.

From the kick off you could tell the Belvo ladies meant business. Not long into the first half Belvo started as they meant to go on with a try from scrum half Charlene Roche. Soon followed by centre Nicki Cregg who out ran the UCD defence to score, which was converted by Sarah Lennon. UCD gave away a penalty in front of the posts, which was easily slotted over by Sarah.

UCD worked hard to get over the line with a forward try, which they converted to bring the score to 15 – 7 at half time.

In the second half another converted try from Nicki brought Belvo out of danger but the Belvo girls did not ease up and continued to battle hard.

From a line out UCD were awarded a penalty ten metres from their try line which they turned into a try, this time not converting as the ball hit the post.

Belvo replied with tries from winger Mary McMahon and flanker Marie Devane, converted by Sarah Lennon and Meghan Keaveney, which sealed the deal, meaning Old Belvedere J1’s escaped relegation in what was definitely their best performance this season.
The final score 36 – 12.

There were plenty of sore bodies after the game as a testament to the passion and commitment shown by all on the pitch.

This fantastic win shows how much the relatively new squad has improved under coaching from ex-player Shannon Reid.
