The Old Wesley Rugby Challenge Cup is for Under-17 players born in 1996 and 1997…
Many Youth teams find it difficult to compete in the provincial leagues and cups, due to a number of players being involved in Senior Cup rugby. We hope that this festival will encourage players to return to Club rugby, once their commitments to schools have finished for the season.
Wesley hope to have between 24 and 30 clubs from Leinster, Munster, Ulster and Connacht. The group stages will take place on Saturday 6th and 13th April and finals on Saturday April 27th. Teams will only need to be available for one of the two group Saturdays and the “Finals” Saturday, if they qualify from their group.
Whilst most provincial and club competition have come to an end by the beginning of April, should an entrant still be in a semi-final or final of such a competition, they will endeavour to be accommodated on an alternate date.
The Festival will take place in Old Wesley’s Junior grounds in Ballycorus Road, Kilternan.
Clubs will be divided into six groups (three groups competing on each group Saturday), ensuring squads play fun, competitive ruby within the Under-17 regulations. The winners of each group and the best two runners up will go into the Cup quarter final draw. The remaining four group runners-up will enter the Plate semi-finals.
The Cup quarter finals, semi-final and final and Plate semi-final and final will take place on “Finals” Saturday. This means that 12 teams progress to “Finals” Saturday.
The Old Wesley Under-17 Challenge Cup should be an exciting, competitive festival and hopefully an aid to encourage players back to club rugby.
