The North Meath RFC tag rugby league between 5th and 6th class pupils began on September 22nd. The aim of this league is to try and give an outlet to primary school children who want to play rugby in their local area.
As a new club, North Meath RFC now has multiple underage teams for boys and girls.
Due to the high number of participants, the club decided to run two separate school leagues; one for boys and one for girls, focusing on developing each individually.
The first day out had over 120 boys taking part. The three schools involved were: St Colmcille’s Kells, Moynalty NS and Carlanstown NS. Despite the rainy start, the sun emerged and everyone enjoyed the day with some great rugby on display.
Another four schools will be joining for the next two rounds of the competition. As a start up competition, it is important to be flexible with the schools’ timetable and so they are able to take part on one, two or all three days.
On September 29th, the first day of the girls’ league took place. Taking part on the day were Our Lady of Mercy and Carlanstown NS. In total there were over 100 girls taking to the field. The sunny weather added to the occasion and a really enjoyable day was had by all.
More schools are also expected to join in on our girls league over the next couple of weeks.
Special thanks must go to the Transition Year students from St Ciaran’s CS in Kells, for refereeing the games and helping out on the day. Thanks also to the teachers from the schools, who have been very supportive of the competition.
