Photos and highlights from Leinster’s Champions Cup semi-final defeat to Toulon in Marseille.
Leinster’s European journey and hunt for a fourth title ended in Marseille yesterday in a tense encounter with reigning champions Toulon, which went into extra time.
Leinster led 6-9 at half-time after three penalties from Ian Madigan, but the sides couldn’t be separated after 80 minutes with the score deadlocked at 12-12.
The French side were reduced to 14 men in the first few seconds of extra time, but a Bryan Habana intercept try and Leigh Halfpenny penalty gave a 10-point lead with time running out.
The boys in blue weren’t done yet, though. A Sean O’Brien try from a powerful rolling maul put leinster within five points of the Top 14 side, and a try would have been enough to win it on the countback rule, but it wasn’t to be.
The final score in Marseille after extra time: Toulon 25 leinster 20.
