Finals Day for March running Railway’s Girls Schools 7s Schools programme takes place this Friday 14th March at Railway Union’s grounds in Park Avenue…
Over the last two months, Railway coaches have been running a structured rugby 7s programme for girls in schools in their community.
“We have been hugely excited at talent, enthusiasm and ability of the girls we’ve coached over the last few months,” said Mere Baker, who has devised and led the programme.
New Zealander Baker is one of the most decorated female players in the game, world cup winner, 7s and 15s international, and six-time winner of Hong Kong 7s said she was excited by the potential of some of the girls on the programme.
“The level of talent is as good as I’ve seen anywhere in the world at this age and stage of development,” said Baker, who has previously worked for New Zealand’s Going For Gold programme. “There are huge opportunities for girls to advance quickly in rugby, to play internationally and perhaps to represent Ireland at the Olympics.”
The tournament kicks off at 2pm, with the finals scheduled from 5pm, and will include teams across all age-groups from schools such as Muckross Park, St Mac Daras, St Louis, Loreto, St Andrews College, Newpark Comprehensive, Sion Hill, Rockford Manor, and St Raphealas, amongst others.
The tournament will be followed by a player’s meal and team presentations, plus the Ireland v France Women’s international on the big screen.
The final running of the programme takes place from 17 March, with the finals on Friday 2nd May. For further information, please see http://railwayunionrfc.com/index.php/age-grade-rugby/girl-s-schools-7s-programme or email girlsrugby@railwayunionrfc.com
