Rock Girls fighting off the pitch…for Charity…
April 15, 2011 12:00 am Richard Blake
On Thursday, 21st April in Tripod, three of the Blackrock Ladies team, Carrie Hanley, Corrina Halpin and Michelle Claffey, will take part in a white collar boxing match in aid of AWARE…
Aware is a national organisation whose purpose is to help defeat depression, and they offer a range of support and information services to those experiencing depression and to relatives and friends. Among the services they offer are: weekly support groups, a lo-call helpline, online support groups, a discussion forum, a schools education programme, public lectures, and information packs.
All of Aware’s support services are delivered by volunteers.
The proceeds from the White Collar Boxing Event will be invested in their schools education programme – ‘Beat the Blues’. This workshop is offered, free of charge, to every secondary school in Ireland. Aimed at transition year/leaving certificate students, the workshop covers the causes of depression, understanding the condition, recognising the symptoms, debunking the myths, and finally, how to get help.
All three girls joined the million dollar baby programme which is an 8-week training programme in The National Stadium to help with their fitness training but they have upped their training in advance of the fights.
This is a first for Carrie and Michelle while Corrina had done a little as part of ‘Rock pre season training in Monkstown Boxing Club and as she had really enjoyed it as it was different to any other training that she had done before she decided to give it another go with some moral support.
Their goals initially were to get fit and tone up but as these goals are being reached they have changed slightly to beating each other and raising as much money for Aware as possible.
All the boxers in their group are beginners and according to Michelle it is very much a group dynamic as they are all in the same boat. Nerves will be high on the night and to quote Corrina: “It’s much easier playing a game of rugby with 14 people to back you up but in boxing it’s just you and your gloves to protect you…”
All support is welcome…
