Ireland flanker Peter O’Mahony has been ruled out of the rest of the Rugby World Cup after sustaining a knee ligament injury against France.

Team captain Paul O’Connell and Jonathan Sexton, who were also taken off during the 24-9 win in Cardiff, will undergo scans today to determine the extent of any injury.

No decision on squad replacements for Peter O’Mahony or Jared Payne has been made as yet.

Speaking after the win over France, Joe Schmidt said: “Paul’s injury doesn’t look great to be honest, that would be a big blow for us. We’re going to wait and see, we probably won’t be able to get him scanned until tomorrow and we’ll know more by Tuesday. It looks like an upper hamstring.

“He was over the ball and just got hit down and through and as a result he felt that his hamstring came under real pressure and wasn’t able to continue after that.”
