The out-half has been ruled out of the opening match of this year’s Six Nations after feeling tightness in his calf on Monday during Ireland squad training and took no part in training this morning.

Speaking about Sexton’s absence from the match this weekend, Ireland forwards coach Simon Easterby said:

“With Johnny, it’s purely now managing his return to training, that will take as long as it takes.

“There’s no timescale, (he) felt tightness yesterday and felt it was in Johnny’s best interests not to push it.”

There was good news as Easterby confirmed that Sean O’Brien has trained fully this week, though Peter O’Mahony and Andrew Trimble are being monitored ahead of the game.

Ireland face Scotland at BT Murrayfield on Saturday at 2.25pm, and are away again the following Saturday to Italy (KO 2.25pm).

Leinster Rugby return to the RDS Arena on Friday, 17th February, with tickets on sale now from €20 for adults and €10 for under-18s.
