A late try from Conor Hickey, which he converted for good measure, sent St Fintan’s through to the second round of the Bank of Ireland Fr Godfrey Cup at the expense of CUS at Castle Avenue on Tuesday.
CUS were ahead three times without being able to shake off the Sutton boys. They first looked to take control from right wing Jonathan Toal’s try in the ninth minute.
St Fintan’s were in a hurry to reply and found the answer from left wing Eoin Dickson, neither of them finding favour from conversions.
The lead was recaptured by fly-half David McCormack to leave CUS ahead 10-5 at the interval.
Aidan O’Kane made a break from the halfway line for Thomas Burke to square it in the 40th minute.
The give and take continued when CUS flanker James Byrne found the line for 15-10.
It would be their last contribution to the scoreboard, despite the threat posed by their talented centre Eoin Brady.
From there, number eight O’Kane used his frame to take St Fintan’s level and centre Hickeys conversion, the first of the game, took them ahead for the first time.
It was still in the melting pot until Hickey stood up to take CUS down.
