Girls and women of Dublin and surrounding areas….what was your New Year’s resolution? Do you remember? Was it to try something new? Or maybe it was to get fit? Lose weight? Make new friends?
This is what women’s Rugby is offering you! I bet you’ve thought about it haven’t you? What is stopping you!?
St. Mary’s College RFC was the venue for the Women Squad’s Open Evening on Wednesday 29th January. The club decided to open their doors to a mid-season open evening, bucking the trend of the usual summer recruitment drives.
“Many girls or women find themselves moving jobs or counties mid-year, or perhaps they had too many commitments during the summer to bind them to rugby. We like to give them the option to start their rugby experience with us in January, secure in the knowledge that if they are new to the sport, they will not be thrown in at the deep end!” says current captain and International player Orla Fitzsimons.
On a rainy Wednesday, the club hosted 16 prospective new members to the Mary’s family. One such new player remarked that with the beginning of the GAA season upon her, training on Tuesday and Thursdays with Marys was the perfect extra push she needed to get her fitness levels up in a team environment and learn some new transferable skills.
For anyone reading this that might have missed the evening, fear not! Why not drop them an email and they will arrange an evening for you to pop along to and see what you think. There is a misconception there where people might think “Oh I’ve missed the first few months, it’s too late now”. This is not true! Everyone is welcome at any stage of the season. Post-Christmas is actually an exciting time to play rugby, as, without stating the obvious about the evenings getting lighter and the (fingers crossed) better weather, it is also cup season! And who doesn’t love some token silverware!
The Mary’s Women’s squad are undoubtedly a close team and if rugby is something you would like to either try, or if you are moving from another team/area, drop us a line on stmaryswomensrugby@gmail.com and let’s see if St. Mary’s College RFC, Templeville Road is the place for you. You certainly won’t regret it and there’s your resolution done and dusted!
