Clondalkin RFC President John ‘Sid’ Stapleton literally took a hands-on role in Gordon Park last weekend taking to the field as the Fourth team dropped off their league campaign…

The playing veteran and second time President traded his club blazer for a number 9 jersey, swapped the committee meeting for the half time team talk and tackled St Mary’s players rather than off field issues in the home defeat.

Inspired by the antics of some of the veterans in last year’s inaugural fourth string’s league season and the third team performances of his older brother Eamon, Stapleton, who managed a successful third string over the last two seasons, dusted off his boots and graced the Gordon Park turf once again.

Fittingly the President took charge and made a scoring return to action in the narrow loss.

No one was more excited about the President taking on playing as well as administration duties as fouth team captain Anto Byrne.

Speaking in an interview with Clondalkin Rugby TV the 20 year old prop said: “It is great to have Sid involved. Having the President on the team is a great boost for some of the new lads.

“It exemplifies what Clondalkin is about, there are no divides the fourths are as valued as the first. Not to mention he played well and played a vital role in yet another improved performance. I would say it has to be rare for presidents to be playing, but I hope Sid continues to play with us for the season.”
