As one of his last duties last month Lord Mayor of Dublin, Gerry Breen, opened the “Give Sport a Go” Ballymun Sports Day in Poppintree Park…

“Give Sport a Go” is the first initiative of The Ballymun Sports Forum committee and it is hoped that the event will attract people to sports and promote a healthy way of life, while at the same time providing an enjoyable and safe outlet for all involved.

The day was fun-packed and entertaining for all age groups with activities such as Soccer, GAA, Volleyball, Athletics, Hip Hop dance and of course rugby being showcased.

“This sports day is a great opportunity for the local sports clubs to show people how easy it is to get active and use their local amenities to their fullest. I want to thank everyone who was involved in making this day possible and I wish all the budding sports stars here today the best of luck”, commented Lord Mayor Breen.

98fm were on site to spread the word about the arrival of the Heineken Cup which was brought around to every child and coach so that they could get their photo taken with it.

Unidare RFC provided rugby skills and with the Leinster Rugby inflatable.

Leinster Rugby’s Dublin City Council CRO Jack Hanratty said: “This sort of day is great to showcase the great work that has been happening with rugby through Unidare RFC. With Unidare now having a base in Ballymun the future looks great for rugby in the area and the rugby club”.

Rosie King from BRL added: ““Give Sport a Go” was a great opportunity for the Ballymun Community and the wider area to sample lots of different types of sports that are on offer in Ballymun.”
