Last September saw the beginning of the brand new and first, tag rugby team for girls aged six to twelve in Suttonians Rugby Club, Sutton…
The girls got off to a flying start, at the beginning of the season with about 15 registered girls turning up for training every Sunday morning. It wasn’t long before the team started to grow, not only in numbers but also in their level of skill and understanding of the game.
Everyone was and still are, shocked as to how fast the girls are developing as players. They took to it like fish to water. Eager to learn and eager to impress. You would never know by watching them train that they only took up the sport a few months ago, thanks to their hard work and dedication.
The girls are looking forward to hopefully playing their first competitive match at the end of the month which I’m sure they will enjoy thoroughly.
In saying that, our training sessions are not about competition or standing out amongst others, our main aim is to make them fun and enjoyable at the same time, keeping fit and making new friends.
This is a big step in the right direction, not only for Suttonians but for women’s rugby in general. The girls’ squad is growing every week, as are many other girls and women’s teams around the country.
Tag Rugby is a fun way to keep fit. It is a non contact, friendly and enjoyable sport no matter what your shape or size.
If you have a daughter, granddaughter, niece or sister that might be interested in joining the Suttonians Girls, why not send them down to Suttonians RFC at 11:15am on Sunday morning and see what they think. You never know, you could see them playing for Ireland some day!
